The first
(and to date only) poetry collection from the author of
Eclipsed, the award-winning
play about the Magdalene laundries. This collection is also
illustrated by the author. "Patricia is writing
now with confidence as she delivers the untold stories,
personal and projected, that make up her world of feeling
and imagination. There is a lovely formation behind the
work. It is beautifully honed, but never does an affected
pursuit of style defeat the purpose of the poems. The pain
is there as evidence of the risk that must be taken in revelation.
The eschewing of all evasion requires a price that has been
paid, and we know that a sensitive intelligence, in combining
with a released imagination, has made a fine poet."
- Michael D. Higgins, [former] Minister for Arts,
Culture and the Gaeltacht, 10 June 1994
About
the Author
Poet,
painter, playwright, graphic artist. Born in County Clare,
she was educated at the St. Louis Convent, Balla, County
Mayo. She trained as a primary teacher at Carysfort College,
Dublin. Her short stories and poems have been published
in Ireland, the USA and Italy. Exhibited widely in Ireland,
her paintings and graphics have also appeared in exhibitions
in Spain, Japan and Hawaii. Eclipsed,
her stage play, premiered at the Punchbag Theatre in Galway
and went on to the 1992 Edinburgh Fringe Festival where
it won the Scotsman Fringe First Award and was short-listed
for the London Independent Theatre Award. The USA premiere
of the play won the Moss Hart Theatre Award in 1994. Awarded
an Arts Council Grant in 1993, her poetry and prose won
prizes at many literary festivals in Ireland. Drawing from
the world of images, from European and Classical Art, from
mythic symbols and shapes, her painting turned to writing,
in particular to poetry and she combined both in her first
collection. The themes of pain and personal revelation are
handled with courage and integrity in all of this multi-talented
artist's work but nowhere with such intelligence and sensitivity
as in her poetry. She lives in Galway city where she is
a member of the Galway Writers' Workshop. Work-in-progress
includes new plays, Harness The Stars and The Generous Imposter,
and she is writing a new collection of poetry.
