Poem from:

Unbelonging by Nicki Griffin

More Details

Migration

Griffin, Nicki

They come after Christmas
in winter plumage,
settle in last year’s roost,
return to familiar pastures
to feed.

The latest arrival holds court
at his usual table,
claiming the barman
as trophy friend,

crows his cleverness
at fleeing the freeze,

mocks the tourists
and their week-long desire
to turn in the sun,

explains how the locals
are unable to grasp
the basics of lawn care
in spite of instruction,

for dinner orders
egg and chips.
